has gone from fear to shock to anger. our reporter tracked down this mother yesterday. she did refuse to answer any of his questions. on tuesday police say she told them someone tried to steal her toddler from her arms in front of their house. she even helped police make a sketch that put the whole neighborhoods on alert. police became suspicious weather canvassing for witnesses and surveillance video turned up nothing. they focused on the mother after they learned she has a criminal history although they woken give any specifics about that. they are not mincing words about this lie. you can't say enough about somebody who prevents information like this especially when you're dealing with kids. and to think about the lies she created. >> reporter: now it is up to the district attorney down here in santa clara county to decide whether or not to press charges

cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is at a safeway right now in san francisco where apparently they are getting more flu vaccine. >> reporter: good morning. the flu is now widespread throughout california and has already taken the life of a bay area woman. a 98-year-old woman died earlier this month from the flu and pneumonia and this marks the first bay area death from the flu this season. now, four other people in the state have also died from the illness one in the sacramento area, another in the central valley, and two down in southern california. officials with the centers for disease control say this is the worst flu season in 10 years. it is now widespread throughout california and it came early this year. it usually doesn't peak until about february. health officials are urging people to wash their hands, cover coughs and get a flu shot. >> they really should see their physician. there are other things that they can do. there are antiviral drugs such as tamiflu that can be used to help treat those people that

this as major indexes have been surging throughout the week. stock futures are mixed this morning with the dow up 7, nasdaq down 7. for more business headlines we are join by ashley morrison of cbsmoneywatch.com on her favorite day, mind you. >> yes! >> reporter: happy friday, everyone. good morning to you, frank and michelle. asian stocks rallied on news that china's economy grew at nearly 8% in the 4th quarter. tokyo's nikkei shot up nearly 3% while hong kong's hang seng added 1%. wall street stocks finished higher yesterday due in part to falling jobless claims and better-than-expected housing starts. the dow was up 84 points on thursday while the nasdaq rose 18 points. and american airlines has a

new look. the red, white and blue stripes along the fuselage are gone. now american planes will be all silver and sport a new logo, red and blue horizontal bars on the tail. american said after 40iers it was time to update its look. the airline says within five years, all of its planes will be switched over to the new look. definitely a more sleek look for them. >> do you like it? >> reporter: i'm not good for change. >> i think it looks better. >> wonder who has to pay for it. the passengers. >> reporter: that's a question on everyone's mind right now i think. >> speaking of change, apparently atms are going to be changing. >> reporter: yes. chase and pnc bank are switching to atms that will dispense $1 and $5 bills. customers can choose how many bills they like in each denomination. chase already rolled out about 400 machines. another 400 are expected by the

end of the year and pnc expects to upgrade its atms by the end of the summer. so you only have 20 bucks or less in your account you just want to get out $5, now you can. >> or $7. >> or $2. waves at the beaches and that could wash away in a hurry. we are planning on some beautiful weather outside today. mostly clear start still chilly in spots below freezing in some spots inland now 40s and mild at the coast. by the afternoon sunshine and some very mild temperatures. moving well into the 60s in many parts of the bay area. so looking look a great afternoon under high pressure. any threat of rain still moving well to the north of this ridge. dry and temperatures above average for this time of year. we could see rain in the bay area middle of next week. 65 in san jose and palo alto. 64 santa clara. 64 degrees in half moon bay. we have 50s and low 60s into parts of the east bay. and inside the bay today we'll find about 63 degrees in oakland. 62 in san francisco. 63 in sonoma. high pressure in control should

be a gorgeous weekend. hazy sunshine continuing. it will change on tuesday clouds rolling in and there's a slight chance we could see some showers make a return on wednesday. that's a look at weather. let's check traffic with elizabeth. >> this is our problem spot on 280 through san mateo county. southbound 280 is a slight location change closer towards vista point. that's where this accident involved several deer and cars. so it sounds like a family of deer was crossing the freeway in that area and several cars hit them. we were seeing some slowing back to 92. heads up 101 might be a better option now as they work to clear the scene. in the meantime this is a live look, we're working to get it back on that westbound 80 commute through berkeley. 18 minutes is the drive time from the carquinez bridge to the maze. not too bad so far through emeryville. mass transit is a "spare the air" day you're always encouraged to use mass transit on these days and so far bart systemwide on time. bart, ace, muni, caltrain and

your ferries all good to go. checking a couple of bridges around the bay area, san mateo bridge moving at the limit towards the high-rise and the bay bridge metering lights remain off. that's traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. 5:49 now. the university of california leaders say tuition hikes can be avoided this fall. that is if the system gets the funding increase proposed by governor brown's budget plan. the quarter billion-dollar increase is less than what the uc system had hoped for. but it is a big turnaround from years of budget cuts in the past. extra funding is due in part to the voter-approved prop 30. they say honesty is the best policy. and it just paid off for a college kid from placer county whose candid cover letter just landed him a gig on wall street. in the cover letter matt ross tells a small investment banking if i recall he has -- firm he has no special skills but also has no qualms about fetching coffee, shining shoes, or even picking up laundry and will work for next to nothing. that's what he put in the letter. san diego state student from
